This is a shocking statistic, Carl! I can't even imagine traveling to live amidst another culture and not bothering to learn a thing or two about it. If I were to live somewhere else, I'd love to take advantage of the situation and learn all I could! Something to ponder for the evening... Thank you for sharing.

Nice. That would not surprise me if India does become popular for expats. It is set to become the most populous nation on Earth in about 40 years. They are democratic, and it seems like it would be a great place to visit for a while.

Excellent article! I have been taking probiotics for years during travel, as well as upon my return. You didn't mention this, but they are absolutely necessary for people returning from more exotic travel destinations, where doctors prescribe a round of antiobiotics to ensure you didn't pick up any infections. The antibiotics usually keep you healthy, but they wipe out your digestive bacteria in the process, wreaking havoc on your bowels in the process. Some fortified yogurt or, as you suggest, probiotic capsules, helps to minimize or prevent this painful occurrence.

Those fees are ridiculous - I think this is just the start of it. The U.S. is making it easier and easier to come here, but harder and harder to leave. Hmm wonder why??

Hi Carl

I had the same worry when I moved to Santiago in Chile. But I figured that the city has produced many world class sportsmen, quite a few footballers who have been snapped up by European teams - so working out in the smog can't be that bad.

A slight plus in my case is that in order to work around job and family commitments the only time I can go running is before rush hour, i.e. 5am. I guess that's another way around the smog!

Your friend is very lucky to have a good contract. By far most expats are paying upwards of USD 300 to 1,000 per month. Plus, Bali is experiencing crippling water and electricity shortages. Add on to that the problems caused by rice and other agricultural fields being sold to build tourist accomodation and Bali is acknowledge by many to be heading for an ecological disaster.
There are other parts of Indonesia that are also beautiful and inexpensive to live in as part of a retirement or other visa...you might want to check those out. (Java for instance)

It's definitely an intriguing option for sure. I have often thought of extending my sabbatical and making it a decade-ical by moving to Bali.
